What love really means
WHAT DOES “love” mean? What can we
learn from its four letters?
L means learning whom to love.
Learn who you are and whom you’re relating to. A person is a non-material being
only temporarily made up of flesh and blood. Learn to see beyond a person’s
facial features, the type of hairstyle he wears, or the brand of jeans he buys.
Man is a beautiful spark from God that exists in a material body.
Unconditional
Each person has weaknesses and
shortcomings. He’s not omniscient, omnipresent or omnipotent. Don’t expect him
to be there everytime you miss him, to understand how you feel all the time.
The less you expect from an imperfect being, the less frustrated you get.
What we need to learn is to love
the real Beloved. His love is perfect, unconditional and eternal. When we have
a relationship with the Supreme Beloved, we have a foundation for a peaceful
and joyful existence.
You can rest in a loving
relationship where there’s no fear, exploitation or pain. In real love, there’s
caring, devotion and joy.
O means offering. In love, there’s
giving and nurturing. It means having the other person’s well-being in mind,
and doing what is beneficial for other living entities. It’s a soul to soul
relationship, not body to body.
We go beyond material activity such
as physical or sexual interaction. Understanding that physical and sexual
engagements are superficial and temporary, the soul seeks higher happiness on
the spiritual plane, where pleasure and joy last.
Enthusiasm
V means vital. Love gives us the
enthusiasm to do what pleases the Supreme and all His children. The
relationship becomes active and dynamic, where a person’s purpose in life is to
render meaningful service that benefits everyone. Love motivates a man to take
great sacrifices in the hope of alleviating the suffering of others.
Pleasure
E means enjoyment. There’s natural
joy in serving with love. When we serve the Supreme Person with loving
devotion, He reciprocates with transcendental pleasure.
Real love is not superficial. It’s
the living being’s most valuable possession. Offer it to someone who can
nurture it.
Giving your heart to the Supreme
Beloved puts us in a secure position in life. We can rest in such a loving
relationship where there’s no fear or doubt — only contentment and happiness.
